About this talk

“I skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.” This well-worn quote from hockey great Wayne Gretzky has become an aspirational metaphor for skating toward the future. As a teacher librarian and educational leader, I have often used this adage as I seek to locate the puck in pursuit of an elusive goal. But here’s the problem -- I can’t skate.

As I ponder the educational future alongside fellow teacher librarians, I wonder if the critical question is not where the puck is going, but what it is that we seek to slap into the goal. What game are we playing? What are the rules? Who are our teammates? And who is playing on the other side?

In this interactive keynote, I would like to examine these questions and share some insights gleaned from leadership of Future Ready Librarians, the national SLIDE research project, and regional efforts from the Pacific Northwest. While we cannot predict the future, we might be able to craft a game plan to better ensure success for the learners in our care.
